This current generation of students is the most highly connected generation through their phones and internet access, and yet at the same time, the loneliest and most isolated, often battling anxiety and/or depression.
College students often do not recognize how their decisions will impact the rest of their lives. This causes them to squander precious opportunities.
Students are in a strategic position to influence those around them both here in the States and around the world. They are future leaders – of families, communities, churches, companies, government, and our world.
We serve as a spiritual resource to students seeking to win them to Christ, build them in their faith and send them out as lifelong Christ-centered multiplying disciples.
I’ll never forget sitting in a Bible study on a hot summer day in Eastern Europe as a college student myself. I was just a 20-year-old student who said ‘yes’ to getting on a plane for the first time and spending 6 weeks on a summer mission trip in Macedonia. That day the words of Romans 10:13-15 clicked in my mind and heart like a light bulb turning on…
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent?
Suddenly, I understood that God invites all of us as His followers to be sent out to tell others about Jesus as well as sending others to do the same. The Lord transformed my heart that summer, opening my eyes to His heart for the world and for those who have never heard the truth of Jesus. I want to be sent out and send others out so that more might know and follow Jesus.
25 years later I still feel called to investing my life in sharing that message with students. Today I serve with our Campus Ministry as a Director of Local Missions, providing pastoral care and leadership development for ministry leaders on the front lines of college campuses across most of Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and part of West Virginia. These leaders shepherd local teams in locations throughout our area including: Northwest PA, Pittsburgh, WVU, Cleveland, Kent State, SouthEast Ohio/OU, Central Ohio, Ohio State, Miami and Cincinnati. Together we are trusting God to turn the more than 1 million students and faculty on over 150 campuses in our area into lifelong Christ centered disciples.
Imagine the impact if every student was sent out from college as a Christ-centered multiplying disciple for a lifetime?!
