Once upon a time, there was a little girl who loved the sport of softball. She loved it so much, that she put much of her time, energy, and passion into the sport. Little did she know that her talent of hitting a yellow ball would not only create a void in her heart to be someone valuable but also would create a passionate desire to know the One who Himself gave her this talent. This little girl has now become a woman who is in love with Jesus Christ and has the opportunity to share this same life-changing love of Christ with college athletes in the Dayton Area as her full-time ministry.
There is a spiritual battle, and I have been called to be on the front lines. Daily, athletes are longing to experience freedom from the pressures of performance, fear of failing, and hiding in their guilt and shame... and I believe ultimately this freedom is found in the face of Christ. I found this freedom in a relationship with Christ my sophomore in college, in my softball playing career at Wright State through Athletes in Action, and he is continuing to show me how to walk in this freedom every day.
So what now?? Jared Wellman and I are Local Team Leaders of the 937 Campus Ministry, composed of 10 campuses in the Dayton area. Our staff team has grown in number and in spiritual health. Our vision is to make disciples who are making disciples on every team in the 937 so that every athlete knows someone who is following Jesus. By the grace of God, our 937 Team currently has 4 schools with AIA staff presence (Central State, Dayton, Wilberforce, and Wright State) and a growing or multiplying group of student athletes.
Jesus said, "The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few." This is true - as we dream of seeing and building sustainable movements of disciples making disciples on all 10 local college campuses - including Cedarville, Clark State, Edison State, Southern State, Wilmington, and Wittenberg), so every college team in the 937 area code has an a Christ-follower who is equipped and making disciples on their team, year after year.
