Cru Omaha is part of national Cru High School - the middle school and high school focus of Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ). The vision of Cru High School is to: Build spiritual movements so that every student on every campus has the chance to know and follow Jesus Christ.
Cru Omaha began in 1986. While pastoring a church in the small town of Fort Calhoun, NE, Gary became increasingly burdened for a way to reach the youth of the area. After many years of praying for an effective strategy, we heard about Cru High School (formerly called Student Venture) and started the ministry part-time in Fort Calhoun. After seeing God touch the lives of many students, Gary resigned from the pastorate in 1991, and with Cherry and their six children, raised enough financial support from interested churches and individuals to begin working full-time with Cru.
As full-time staff, we are now recruiting and coaching volunteers to reach other schools and communities, and more students are being reached for Christ. Cru Omaha currently ministers to students on these campuses: Blair Otte Middle School (Blair, NE), Fort Calhoun HS & Fort Calhoun Jr Hi (Fort Calhoun, NE), South HS (Omaha, NE), Accelere Alternative (Omaha, NE), Central HS (Omaha, NE), North HS (Omaha, NE), and Marrs Middle School (Omaha, NE). Currently, we are a staff team of 3 full-time staff, and an amazing group of about 25 volunteers who give of their time to reach students. As a result, high school students on each campus are coming to know Jesus, are being discipled in Him, and are being sent to reach their peers.
If we can but show the whole world that being committed to Christ is no tame, humdrum, sheltered monotony, but the most thrilling, exciting adventure the human spirit can ever know, then those who have been standing outside the church and looking askance at Christ would come crowding in to pay allegiance to Him. And we might well expect the greatest revival since Pentecost. (Dr. James Stewart)
