After 15 years in Sweden, in 2021 we took another step of faith and moved to Santiago de Compostela in Northwest Spain to work with pilgrims along the Camino de Santiago. What on earth is the Camino de Santiago you might ask? The Camino is a Catholic series of networked trails which crisscrosses Europe, terminating at the cathedral in Santiago. Each year more than 400,000 pilgrims will travel various distances to obtain their Compostela and finish their pilgrimage. Many of these people start their journey for spiritual reasons and many other become spiritually interested along the way. It turns out that there exists a place in Europe where each year 400,000 spiritually interested people will walk by your front door, and that place is along the Camino de Santiago. It is a tremendous opportunity to tangibly show the Love of Christ in action and in relationships.
Agape Spain already has had a ministry to pilgrims showing the love of Christ through radical hospitality which has served as model for other ministries along the various Camino trails. It is quite inspiring. We have moved to Spain in order to help start other types of work with pilgrims along the Camino. Some of the ways we are looking to develop ministry are debriefs for groups and individuals, to help them process their Camino and return with a deeper understanding of what it means to follow Jesus, to lead groups of leaders along the Camino and help them to go deeper in leadership and their inner lives, to help start new initiatives such more houses where pilgrims can be served with radical hospitality via a network of volunteers from around the world, and on. We are excited by the endless possibilities of reaching pilgrims, creating pilgrims, training volunteers and making Jesus known.
