We are Andy and Lauren May. We have been serving with in various capacities with Cru for around 10 years. In 2012 we began serving with Bridges International (the international student ministry of Cru) in Omaha , and in July of 2017 we moved to Ft. Collins, CO. The story below captures why we love Bridges International so much.
"Wendy" came to Omaha as a visiting scholar. While she was here God shocked her with His love displayed through His people. She began reading the Bible every day and praying that God would reveal Himself to her so that she would believe. She began believing more of what she was hearing and reading, but was still hung up on where Buddhism fit into the mix.
That December we took her and 28 other internationals from Omaha to a Bridges conference in Florida. There, Wendy had the opportunity to hear from and ask questions of a believer who was a native speaker of her language. This changed her life. The last night the speaker talked about God's love. She told me a quote from his talk that gripped her heart, "Kindness without love is incomplete." She said, "Buddhism teaches us to be kind, but you can be kind to someone without loving them. Now I understand what makes Jesus the God." This was the moment that Wendy understood that the Buddha may have been a wise teacher, but God is [The One and Only] GOD and no one else deserves the same worship and honor as Him.
That night she went to her room to take a shower. As she was thinking about all of this, she began praying in a way she never had before. She found herself saying things to Him that were similar to wedding vows. And as the water from the shower was washing over body she sensed that God was washing her completely clean.
It is a joy and an honor to walk with students as they take their first steps towards God, as they believe for the first time, and then help them grow in their faith. And even though it is sad to see students leave, it is inexplicably exciting when a beliver goes home to his/her country (many of which are closed to Christianity) newly equipped with the gospel and a vision to reach their families and friends for Christ.
