As a freshman in college at Northern Illinois University I expected to be an all-American wrestler. I expected to be raised up on a glorious platform in front of all my friends and family. I expected to be made much of, and then once I had been elevated to hero status, I figured I would turn around and say "all glory to God". But God had other plans. God has used Athletes in Action as a tool to chip away at my pride, to break me down and build me up on a firm foundation of faith in Jesus Christ. God has led me to the point where I can finally live surrendered to His will as He continues to transform me. God changed my affections and reshaped my desires during my four years of college and He led me to forgo my 5th year of wrestling eligibility in order to Intern with Athletes in Action on campus at NIU.
God has wired me and given me the experiences to relate with student athletes because I was an athlete who benefitted tremendously from the ministry of AIA. There's nothing else I'd rather be doing other than sharing Jesus with athletes. I went from being an intern to a short term international missionary in Puerto Rico, to my current position as an AIA staff member on the Chicago AIA team, where I work primarily with college wrestlers. My role with AIA has allowed me to continue my theological and philosophical education. Since 2018, I've complete two Master's degrees in theology and I'm finishing up a third in philosophy of religion. Working on staff with AIA provides to motivation to do the hard course work in the classroom-- I know my wrestlers are going to ask me what I'm learning and if I can't explain it to them, then I don't know it. Being a graduate student also provides me with cool opportunities to bring deep questions from the men I disciple to my professors who have spent decades thinking through answers to such questions. I love being the middleman between hard questions and deep answers.
Like many other missionary organizations, Cru and AIA staff members have the responsibility to develop a team of financial partners who provide the necessary finances for their outreach, including their salary and ministry related expenses. In order to report to campus I will need to be fully funded, I'm asking friends and family to prayerfully consider partnering with me financially in monthly amounts or one time gifts. Your partnership in prayer and in finances can make a difference in reaching people for Christ. Would you make a monthly commitment of $100 or some other amount?
