When people ask me about my experience with Cru at Virginia Tech my answer is usually something along the lines of “How long do you have?” But let’s start from the top.
I became a Hokie because I wanted to go into Hospitality and Tourism and Virginia Tech had one of the best business schools in the country. The goal (and dream job) was to be a manager at a hotel in Disney World one day. However, over the years of college and throughout my different internships I realized that my passion didn’t lie within management. I found the most joy when I studied and participated in event planning. But I’m getting ahead of myself… I entered college with two immediate goals – Get a job, join a ministry.
My minor at college was Theatre Arts so it made a lot of sense that my job was working backstage at a theater called the Moss Arts Center. I entered that job with not a lot of backstage knowledge but I had phenomenal supervisors that really valued teaching. I soon learned an incredible amount and my passion for backstage work grew far beyond what I ever imagined it would.
And lastly, Cru happened. My first time at a large group meeting I was that scared little freshman who only knew one other person in the room of 500 people and yet I felt fully loved and known by God during worship that night. I specifically remember crying while standing there surrounded by 500 strangers and hearing God tell me that this was exactly where I was supposed to be. Fast forward: I went on a Summer Mission to Ocean City, Maryland which absolutely changed my life. Fast forward: I started discipling two brilliant younger sisters in Christ and God showed me I could actually be a spiritual leader. Fast forward: I went on a mission trip to Africa over my spring break. Fast forward: I joined the leadership team as the Cru Team Leader which was by far my biggest blessing of my college career. Fast forward: God asked me to join staff with Cru on their Operations Team as an Events and Conference Planner.
Stop. You’re telling me that I get to be an event planner after all? I get to help plan conferences and do the behind the scene stuff like I’ve been doing at my job for the past three and a half years? And wait… I get to do all of it so that other people can have the space and environment to grow closer to Jesus? I get to use BOTH my major and my minor to glorify the Lord?
Have you ever heard of such kindness?
Back in 2011 I went to a church camp where at the end of the week the pastor asked us if we would say “yes” to God no matter what the calling may be. I remember sitting there with tears in my eyes and an understanding of the Holy Spirit in my heart, and I told God my first “yes”. It was then that I got out a piece of paper and a pen to write down what I had just done in case future Logan needed a reminder of how I was feeling in that exact moment. That worn little paper is still folded up in my bible today and it says:
“Dear Logan, You said ‘yes’ to God tonight. Saying yes means that whatever God is asking you to do you will do it, and will do it without questioning Him just like Abraham. You said yes because you want to be on fire for Him. You said yes because you want to be so completely full of Him that you overflow.”
So here I am. Seven years later and giving God one of my biggest yeses to date. I am giving my life, my future, my career, and my finances to Him as I enter into ministry. Would you enter into my mission with me by giving a financial gift monthly, quarterly or even annually? Whether you know me personally, know of me, or maybe even just stumbled upon my page: I pray that you will be willing to take this faith step with me.
