Today we encounter a wide variety of questions related to sexuality and gender. As followers of Christ, we want to navigate LGBT+ questions in a way that is compassionate to people and faithful to scripture.
Hello, my name is Oluwadara Fasipe. During my time at Purdue University as a student, I went on a 5 Week Cru summer mission trip to Detroit, Michigan in 2016 after my best friend Lawrence invited me to go with him. This mission trip greatly transformed my Christian life as we reached out to students at Wayne State University with the Gospel, grew in our faith, and worked alongside local ministries and churches to serve the city of Detroit.
Tobias, one of the Cru staff members leading the trip, spoke to all of us who attended about the necessity of making disciples as a Christian and that God really desires to use ordinary people to introduce people to the Extraordinary God. I was challenged by these messages but also energized to think through how I could turn a new leaf after the trip would end.
There were also several students on the trip who had been a part of a ministry that Cru partners with called the Impact Movement (impactmovement.org) that is focused on equipping Black students to become disciples of Christ to integrate their faith into every aspect of life. The ministry vision began to be clarified.
Close to the end of our time in Detroit, another Cru staff member took me aside and shared with me Esther 4:14. Mordecai was reminding Esther the implications of her decision to address the King concerning the plight of Israel. He says in the latter half of that verse "for who knows whether you have come to the kindgom to a time like this?". With this Scripture, he asked me to further reflect on how God had been working in me throughout the trip but also how I could uniquely respond going into my junior year.
Shortly after the trip, I connected with one of my Cru staff leaders at Purdue about my readiness and eagerness to live out the Commission. He revealed to me that he and the rest of the staff team had been praying for ways to reach Black students at Purdue for Christ. After hearing this, my reaction was like two friends who were heading to the same destination unbeknownst and find themselves together at the same spot. We prayed for the Lord's discernment and decided to move forward. The rest of my time in Cru as a student was focused on further spiritual growth, leadership, community, and launching efforts.
I soon graduated from Purdue University in May 2018 with the mission of working with Cru full time to reach college students, particularly Black students, with the gospel of Christ and see redemption and renewal take place. I have been serving at Purdue University as full time staff leading the Impact Movement at Purdue.
