Hello! My name is Bethany and I’m excited to begin my third year on staff this fall as a full-time intern serving at Lee University and the University of Tennessee Chattanooga (UTC)!
I was a part of Cru at Lee as a student for all four years of college and my time in Cru was transformational for my life. Joining our Cru family was exactly what I needed during my freshman year. I was homesick and struggling to transition to college. My Cru family came around me and encouraged me to keep seeking the Lord in the midst of heartache and pain. Since then, through discipleship, I have been challenged to live empowered by the Spirit every day not working to fulfill my plans and desires but living yielded to the will of the Father. Through this family, the heart of the Lord has been revealed to me in new and beautiful ways and my heart has been burdened for others on my campus and in my life to know Him. As a student leader, I was a Bible study leader and discipleship leader for younger students which gave me practical opportunities to love other students and share my faith. When my staff encouraged me to apply for Cru staff I hesitantly, but excitedly, said yes. They shared with me that they watch me come alive when working with students doing ministry and I spent time with the Lord examining the passions He has placed in me for college ministry from my time with Cru. It breaks my heart that 70% of students who grow up going to church leave when they go to college because that should have been me if it hadn't been for a phenomenal youth group and my Cru family. Thus, I joined staff in March of 2021 as a student-staff and have since completed two years as a part-time staff at Lee University. It has been an immense honor to share the gospel with Lee students and walk with them as they grow in their relationship with the Lord.
As a full-time intern, I will work faithfully to walk with students from Lee and UTC to help them become lifelong, multiplying disciples of Christ. In order to do this, we first introduce students to Jesus. This looks like sharing the Gospel with all our students and inviting them into a space to ask their questions and doubts. Whether students grew up in the Church or have never heard the Gospel we want to give them an opportunity to respond to the truth of the Gospel! Next, we build the students up in their faith. We do this through Bible studies, discipleship (mentorship), conferences/retreats, summer missions, and challenge them to consider using their gifts in leadership positions. We do all of this to ensure that every student that goes through our Cru ministry is able to share the Gospel wherever they land. Some will do full-time ministry, but most will join the workforce in some other way and we want to equip them to be able to form relationships with those they have been placed with and eventually share the Gospel and disciple them, Lord willing.
As Cru is at its very core, a relational ministry, we form relationships with our partners just like we do with our students. Thus, every staff member has a team of prayer and financial partners who will pray for us and give financially if they're able. As it is a relationship we get the honor of checking in with and praying for our partners as well. As the Lord enables our partners, they give however works best for them. Some give monthly, quarterly, or one-time with whatever amount is appropriate for them. It has been such an encouragement to see the Lord provide financially for our ministry and also provide me with the added bonus of new and incredible friendships.
