“Before we had a water well in our village, there were only two things we could do,” says Maysa, a wife and mother of a young son in the African nation of Chad. “We could walk 7 kilometers (4.5 miles) to try to get clean water in another village and carry it back. Or we could drink dirty water if we could find it in the hills.”
Both were terrible options. Carrying large canisters of water such a great distance was nearly impossible, as they got heavier by the minute. And drinking dirty water was almost unthinkable for Maysa, who shared:
“Many of us experienced illness due to dirty water, such as diarrhea, stomach pain and skin diseases.”

“People from GAiN came to help us,” Maysa says. “They worked with local drillers to make a well here. They also put in a solar-power pump, tanks to hold the water, and two spigots. It is truly amazing. We have a source of clean water, a very abundant source.”
