    You may be surprised to learn that more than 1,800 partner ministries use “JESUS,” many as their primary tool for evangelism, discipleship and church planting. One of those ministries is Unto^®, the humanitarian arm of Cru^®. We recently spoke with Unto’s president, Al Goff. You may have read a bit of his interview in a recent newsletter you received. Here is the full report about this fruitful partnership that you help make possible.

    Al Goff: “Unto and the ‘JESUS’ film go together like ham and cheese! Of 100+ humanitarian projects we carried out in 2024, close to 80% or more involved the ‘JESUS’ film. The results are stunning.”

    “In the name of Christ, Unto seeks to relieve human suffering. We provide food, blankets and emergency goods, and we drill deep water wells for extremely remote villages in the most difficult of places. Clean water is critical, especially to protect children from deadly diseases. Last year, we drilled and installed 51 water wells, providing clean, safe water for tens of thousands of people, again using ‘JESUS.’

    “A few months ago, I traveled with a team to a very remote village in a desert area of Africa. It took us three days of travel, bouncing over some of the most rugged roads you can imagine, actually ‘no-roads,’ trails and dry riverbeds.

    “Days behind, the drilling rig and crew followed. These truck-based platforms are much slower and must travel over the same rugged ground. When we arrived in the village it was ‘in the middle of nowhere.’ The people welcomed us, saying, ‘No one ever comes to us, we are too far, forgotten.’

    “The religious leader, also the chief of the village, described how their women (girls 15 years and younger, including his own daughter) must walk great distances for water. And it’s dangerous. Sometimes the girls are raped, or they are attacked by wild animals. They hike to higher terrain, to a place with boulders. In the shade behind large rocks, they scoop out water, accumulated from the evening dew. Then they must walk back with heavy containers, once more facing the dangers. The next day, they go again.

    “At last, our drilling rig arrived. (We always hire in-country crews.) They went to work. I want to mention that there are government agencies and other groups that drill, but the wells they dig often fall into disrepair. And one aggressive religion from the north also drills wells, but the people must ‘convert’ to be able to draw. The wells Unto installs are freely available to all (and are maintained). Being open to all is a great witness to followers of that religion.

    “When a well is complete, we hold a celebration. They are incredible moments as word spreads and people come from all around. When the water first flows, they cheer, dance and shout. Clean, safe water pours out at no cost, free, with nothing charged or demanded. To them it’s a miracle. Their girls don’t have to risk their lives. Their gardens grow, health improves and the girls can go to school. It’s revolutionary for them.

    “The best part is that they can’t understand why we would travel so far to help, expecting nothing in return. When they ask us ‘why?’ we tell them that, ‘… we serve a Master who knows your suffering. He loves you and commanded us to go,’ and that Christians in a distant land have paid the cost for them. They then ask, “Who is this Master?’

        “That’s when we offer to show them a film that tells His story using the equipment Jesus Film Project^® provides. One religious leader was so intrigued that he asked us to show the film on the side of his house of prayer. Instead, we offered to use our portable screen so people could watch from both sides. We expected 400 people to come that night. Instead, there were 2,000. They were blown away.

    About half the people (1,000) prayed to receive Christ. There are now 15 thriving churches planted within walking distance of the well. A church planter who had accompanied the drilling crew is now living among them, taking the believers through a 13-week discipleship course using Jesus Film^® media tools.

    “In one Asian nation, home to narco-terrorists, 2,800 received clean water and watched ‘JESUS.’ About 1,700 made decisions for Christ. And they shared with others, with another 4,500 people. Their witness, going from person to person, resulted in 1,962 decisions for Christ. They, too, are being followed up, learning to share the gospel.

    “As part of Unto’s strategy, a trained church planter lives with the people and maintains the well. We give them tools and spare parts, assuring that the well will continue to deliver clean water. It’s love that opens doors, that earns trust. Even the most resistant people want to meet the Master who sent us. The doors open to show them ‘JESUS.’

    “I want the friends and partners of Jesus Film Project to know how grateful we are for the showing equipment and the translations of ‘JESUS.’ Unto and the ‘JESUS’ film truly go together like ham and cheese!”

    I thank you, too, for all you do to make these partnerships possible. We just heard from another partner working in an extremely dangerous and resistant nation in Asia. Instead of digging water wells, this partner feeds the hungry in the slums. Hearts are opening in great numbers. It’s then that their teams show people “JESUS” on video tablets you have sent. The director said…

    “We are privileged to meet people at their point of need: hunger. We are feeding 5,000 people every week. Barriers to hearing the gospel, which are very strong here, melt away. They want to know why we are helping them and we tell them, ‘Come and see. We have a film about the One who has sent us and loves you.’

    “We are using the film ‘JESUS,’ showing it on these wonderful video tablets you have supplied. People sit in circles and watch. They are stunned, deeply moved by the person of Jesus, His story. The Holy Spirit moves as they hear His Word in their heart language. They are believing in great numbers. It's beyond wonderful to watch, far more than we could ever hope.

    “We are getting them into small faith groups, teaching and discipling them using the tablets. We are seeing many miracles as Jesus heals the sick, demonic possession broken, joy that is spreading, amazing to behold. It’s no understatement to say it's like the birth of the church in the Book of Acts. Our great thanks go to the donors of Jesus Film Project who have given to make these video tablets available. As always, we can use more! And this is happening in one of the most dangerous, resistant nations in Asia.”
