Chad is officially a secular state with freedom of religion, but the government favors Islam. Muslims have become dominant in government, trade and the army, and Muslim missionaries are multiplying. The population is divided between Muslim northerners and the increasingly marginalized Christian/ethnic religion southerners. Syncretistic lifestyle and petty legalisms cripple many congregations.
