Harriet and I (Moses) are on staff with Cru. We are missionaries to the International Leadership University (ILU), formerly Nairobi International School of Theology (NIST), in Kenya. ILU is a ministry of Cru/ Campus Crusade for Christ International.
The Church in Africa is experiencing unprecedented numerical growth. There is a spiritual hunger, and many people are responding positively to the Gospel. However, there is no corresponding increase in the number of trained ministers to nurture those who are coming to faith. There is an acute shortage of trained and biblically rooted leaders at every level of ministry. Some studies show that more than 8o% of the pastors in Africa do not have any form of theological training. Some studies also show that more than 50% of the Churches are led by volunteers, who too, are not trained for the task. Psalm 78:72 says that David led God’s people with a heart of integrity and hands of skill; most of our pastors have the heart, but often lack the skill to do even the most basic pastoral duties. Clearly, ministry requires more than just zeal and willingness to serve.
There is clear evidence that the absence of trained pastors and other leaders is already hurting the cause of Christ in this region. Too often, the Jesus presented in evangelistic meetings is different from the Jesus of the Bible. Also, discipleship often amounts to no more than repeated denunciation of a few 'cardinal' sins such as adultery, alcoholism, and witchcraft. The shortage of trained and biblically rooted pastors and other Church workers cuts across all levels of ministry in the Church in Africa.
Our ministry in Nairobi, Kenya focuses on this crucial need in the African Church: We help train pastors and other Church leaders in a formal setting, that is, at ILU. Most of the men and women who need this training do not have the necessary qualifications to enroll in formal seminary education-these are offered training through the forum of leadership seminars and conferences.
Our goal is to equip our students with the relevant knowledge and skills, and to help them know Jesus better, follow Him more closely, become more like Him, and become more effective ministers and disciple-makers wherever the Lord sends them. Harriet teaches courses in Evangelism, Discipleship, and Christian Education; while I teach courses in Hermeneutics, Biblical Greek, and the New Testament.
Cru has no central funds for paying salaries and ministry expenses. Therefore, like the staff of many other mission organizations, we depend upon the consistent financial support of individuals and Churches like you. We are grateful to all of you, our prayer and financial partners, for making it possible for us to be a part of this great mission agency and to play a part in what God is doing in Africa.
