Croatia is a beautiful Mediterranean country with deep roots in Roman Catholicism reaching back to the 7th century. Up until the end of the 20th century, over 85% of our people considered themselves Catholic. For the vast majority of us, however, it was a traditional religion deeply tied to our national identity. People did not have a personal relationship with the living God through Jesus Christ.

Neither did we, until the Lord found us and changed our lives through the  ministry of Cru on our college campuses in Split (Vjenci) and Zagreb (Anita), and called us to help him do the same for others.

In more recent years, with the world becoming more interconnected and ideas spreading through the internet and social media, traditional religion in Croatia is on the decline. However, spiritual openness is on the rise! People who have been burned by religion or disillusioned by the hypocrisy of religious systems are still seeking for something larger than themselves. Millennials and Gen Z are turning to social media to find meaning and purpose and a way to contribute to their world. Inside the Catholic church, over the last 10 years there have sprung up dozens of charismatic fellowships that focus on a personal relationship with Christ.

In this context, our desire is to use every opportunity, strategy or tool to invite more people to “Come and see!” and plug them into local churches

The primary focus of Vjenci’s team is the training and equipping of our churches to do evangelism through the Alpha course. Aanother big part of his ministry is music. He uses secular music with a deeper meaning to connect with seekers outside of the church. He enjoys leading people in the worship of our Lord whenever an opportunity presents itself.

Anita, with her heart for discipleship and personal/spiritual development, as well as the interest in culture and it’s patterns, now helps build the people and systems capacity for the Fokus field ministries to expand to all of Croatia and beyond. Because the majority of her ministry looks like office work, she makes sure that she is leading at least one women’s Bible study group and is personally discipling a few students each year.

Will you prayerfully consider partnering with us in continuing to reach all of Croatia and the Balkans for Jesus? You can do this through prayer and/or financially.
