The challenges urban communities face are staggering, yet we know the gospel has the power to change lives. In fact, the gospel changes everything. But change must be introduced, and we believe that local leaders — the change agents — are the best conduit for change, engaging community right where they live. WIL provides strategies and a model to minister to urban youth, families, and individuals while combating issues such as fatherlessness, incarceration, teen pregnancy, broken families, homelessness, human trafficking, gangs, drugs, and other social ills they face.
WIL is grounded in the belief that, by investing in emerging urban leaders who are adults (people with demonstrated potential for effective organizational leadership), our urban youth and families will be blessed. WIL invests in emerging leaders by helping them expand or develop certain core values and some "breakthrough" skills and plans. This process will help them plan and implement their call/purpose more effectively to youth, families and the churches or organizations though which they serve.
WIL is committed to investing in emerging urban leaders by addressing their whole person, from their work to community to personal life. We believe that leaders are the key assets within the community, and WIL is a serious attempt to be a blessing to developing leaders. From that kind of base, participants will be able to help the youth and families they serve make better, long-term, life-changing decisions for themselves. In the process, our churches and organizations will become more fruitful places for youth and families to connect as they work out their life-changing decisions.
Development largely will occur through a mix of networking among participants and WIL trainers, mentors, educational offerings, and the identification and implementation of plans for the future.
Imagine what our community would be able to accomplish if we empowered each other and held one another accountable for our actions. Think about the barriers that would be eliminated if we equipped and supported a generation of leaders who were determined to make good decisions in life and encouraged their peers to do the same. This is what we strive for!
