Our Lives
Rebecca was born and reared in New Orleans, Louisiana. Charles was a native of Charleston, West Virginia. We met each other as students at the University of Pennsylvania.
We married in 1980. After completing our Bachelors degrees we joined the full-time staff of Campus Crusade for Christ. We spent 1981-1984 in Atlanta being trained in ministry at the schools of the Atlanta University Center (Clark, Morehouse, Morris Brown and Spelman Colleges). In 1984 we moved to Washington, D.C. where we directed the team that pioneered Campus Crusade for Christ's ministry at Howard University. After 8 years there, Charles was asked to assume the position of National Director of Ethnic Student Ministries for the Campus Ministry in Campus Crusade for Christs National Offices in Orlando, Florida.
In 2002, The Impact Movement was launched as an independent 501.c.3 organization. Charles serves as its President and Chairman of the Board, while Rebecca served as Vice President for 9 years. She currently is Director of Special Projects.
The Lord has blessed us with six children, Micah (who is married to the former Jamaica Woodyard), and Jared (married to the former Brittany Dahlstrom), Daniel (married to the former Chanel Cooper), Karis, Caleb and Joy.
Our Ministry - The Impact Movement
College Chapters
The Impact Movement focuses on ministry to college students with a presence on over 100 campuses across the country. Using a Distance Coaching model, the movements staff and fellows resource students and volunteers who actually carry out the ministry on campus. These students lead evangelism, follow-up and discipleship with their peers on campus, and in outreach in their local communities.
Community Engagement
While a heart for the community has permeated everything that we do, we are launching our National Tutoring Initiative in 2009. Our goal? On a weekly basis, every Impact student tutoring a child with a focus on basic literacy. This is just the beginning of the kind of impact we hope to see college students make on the critical issues facing our community
Financial Responsibility
We plan to launch a six week curriculum to equip our students with basic biblical foundations concerning finances.
US Summer Missions
During summers we offer a variety of missions opportunities to both give students and alumni the opportunity to use their gifts to reach others and to develop their leadership potential. These missions projects operate in Memphis, Tennesse and Orlando, Florida. We also have a Music Project based in Indianapolis which tours the country using music to share the gospel and encourage believers.
World Missions
Since the summer of 1995 we have sent 20+ teams to various countries including Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe to help launch ministry on campuses and to do outreach in the community. In the summer of 2002 we sent nearly 300 summer missionaries to Africa, which is the largest missions mobilization of African Americans in history. We maintain three international summer projects, one to Ghana, and two in South Africa. We also have our second Short Term International Team (STINT) serving in South Africa for 15 months.
National Conference
The Hallmark of our ministry is our national conference, held semi-annually during the Christmas Break. The conference has grown over the years from 550 in 1991, to average 2000 for the past several conferences. Over 16,250 have attended in total. The conference attracts more than college students. Many of our alumni lead youth ministry in their local churches. As a result, 25% of our national conference audience is comprised of high school students and career adults. This has also led to the creation of the Impact Association, comprised of those who are beyond college age, but still want to stay connected to the movement.
