The University of Zagreb has 72,000 college students, which is 44% of the total student population in Croatia. In a country that is nominally predominantly Roman Catholic, where the percentage of evangelical Christians is less than 0.003, in a time of post-modernism, globalization and the development of technology, there is great competition for the hearts of students! Along with the instant culture created by social networks and the amount of information and news on a daily basis, students miss the most important one - the good news about Jesus Christ. There is a need for transformation of hearts and minds of young people who are future leaders of our country!
We both experienced this same transformation in our college student ages by the end of when we accepted Christ as Lord. By God’s grace, he used faithful servants to share the most beautiful news with us and change our lives -- now we hope to play that role in other people’s lives. We truly want for as many students as possible to experience and meet Jesus as the living God who is waiting for them saying, “Come, follow Me.”
We are trusting God to reach the 72,000 college students in Zagreb with the message of Christ. And so we do that through a three-fold strategy that we are trusting God to do. We want him to win students to Himself, build them up in their faith, and then send them out to the world to win others for Him.
Winning is just introducing people to Jesus - how they can have a relationship with Him. We do that primarily through one-on-one conversations, but also there are large outreaches and weekly events where we can talk about the Gospel. One of the last things that we do is through social media. Knowing how big it is among young population, we are present and active on various platforms and also have web pages and articles where students can go and read about questions they have.
The second thing is about creating life changing community. We provide students grow in their relationship with God through things like conferences, workshops, seminars and retreats which we put on for them. And also, we help them learn to actually apply the Bible to their lives through small group Bible studies or large weekly meetings. One of my favourite thing to do is mentoring relationship where I can meet one-on-one with students to build them up in the foundations of their faith, and also how to share their faith with others.
And the third part of what we do is we send students to take the message of the gospel to the world. First thing that we start with is going on Campus with them and encouraging them to speak to students and share about the good news. It is of huge importance for them to join the local church so the next step might be entering the church leadership or maybe even full time ministry. In this context one thing is crucial, wherever they are and whatever they do we pray that they would consider themselves a minister of the gospel in their work or school setting.
